Detailed guide to colour coded flood alert levels

 

Green:      Normal Winter Conditions no particular flooding concerns

 

Yellow:       Low Flood Risk. Rivers may overflow with local effects with fast and dangerous flows. People should exercise care especially in the case of outside activities on and near water.

 

There is Low Flood risk with fast flowing and/or rapidly rising waters. However these are not expected to cause significant damage. These conditions require care and attention particularly in the case of outside activities on or near water.

 

At yellow warning conditions keep yourself informed about flood levels and weather forecasts. Do not carry out activities in areas where you are unaware of the flood pattern. Streams and river may overflow locally and some may experience rapidly rising waters.

 

Be careful if you need to access a watercourse or an area which is a flood zone. Obey any warning signs or local advice.

 

Orange:      Medium Flood Risk. Overflows from rivers and lakes and on the coast may have a significant impact on communities. There is some threat to life and the safety of property and persons

 

There is significant local flood risk. Large overflows could have a significant impact on community life and the safety of property and people.

 

Extensive localized flooding is possible. Traffic conditions may be problematic and smaller roads may be cut off. There could be disturbances which may affect rail transport and there could be Electricity black outs in certain areas. Flood retention structures such as dams, dykes and river embankments could be weakened and/or submerged.

 

In orange flood conditions look after your safety. Limit any travel unless necessary and comply with warning signs and local authority advice and instructions. Stay informed of developments via the internet and radio and check flood weather regularly. Ensure that property which could be flooded or washed away is protected.

 

Red:             High Flood Risk. There is a likelihood of major widespread flooding. There is also a direct threat to life and safety of persons and property.

 

At red risk levels there may be very large widespread flooding even in rarely flooded areas, flooding may also be from a number of different sources. Traffic conditions may be extremely difficult on the entire road and rail network. There may be prolonged electricity power outages. There is also very high risk to flood control structures and power cuts may occur. Flood retention structures such as dams, dykes and river embankments could be weakened and/or submerged and may fail and overflow. There is a high risk of landslides and trees falling

 

Make yourself safe and follow all of the safety instructions of the regional local and national authorities. Avoid all unnecessary travel. Stay informed of developments and forecasts via the internet and local and national radio.  Ensure that property and assets that could be flooded or washed away are secured. Ensure that you have adequate supplies of essential medicines, foodstuffs and fuel. There is significant risk that electricity, water, power and support networks will be cut.

 

 

Purple:        Extreme Flood Risk. There is major flooding which is beyond that which is currently recorded. There is extreme threat to life and safety of persons and property.

At Purple Flood Risk levels there will be very large widespread flooding from a number of sources. It will be extensive and prolonged and will be at levels above previous recorded flood levels and flows. Road and travel conditions will be very severely restricted. There will be severe effects on electricity. There will be extreme risk from flood control structures. This may lead to catastrophic failures of flood control structures including dams, embankments and levees. There will be significant landslides and high numbers of trees falling.
